My mother used to love telling this story: I came home one day with a three-quarter tear in my trousers. "Were you and Sheila climbing trees again?" she asked. "No", I said, "I fell and tore them on a nail in the pavement". Who knew they didn't nail pavement down? I can just imagine Mom and Jeanie (as Mom always called her) rolling their eyes on that one! For 5 of my growing years, Jeanie was like my third parent. Although Sheila and I lived 4 or 5 doors apart, it seemed we were always up to something together. Mac took us horseback riding for the first time. Jeanie watched us dive and splash in the St. Lawrence countless days, saw me learn to ride a bike (and fall), roller skate (and fall), skate board (you get the picture). Of course, it wasn't always fun and falling. Sheila and I weren't always perfectly behaved (remember the tree climbing). But I remember Jeanie as part of the childhood and community every child deserves and will remember for all the days that follow. Thanks Jeanie! xo
