The Apple Lady
I worked many happy autumn weeks at Doug and June's apple orchard picking, sorting, grading and selling apples and pears. Doug was the one who was out and out, racing around on his golf cart telling me what and when to pick. However, it was the demure June in the house who dictated to Doug which apples were ripe, what type they were (even though Doug insisted he knew!). He referred to her as "The Boss". She was constantly up on ladders and that crazy lift that I never got the hang of. I was always welcome in their house for a bathroom break, a glass of water (although she always offered a beer in the early afternoon!) and those crisp ginger cookies that only June and my mother knew how to bake, accompanied by many political discussions. She was a classy, sophisticated lady who I will truly miss.
