Obituary for Gertrude Eleanor "Gert" Dales (Adams)

DALES, GERTRUDE "GERT" ELEANOR (nee ADAMS)
Mom died at home in the care of her family Sunday October 10, 2021. She had been diagnosed with cancer in August of this year and was in her 96th year. Mom grew up in Brockville at ‘12 George,’ and attended BCI, subsequently receiving a business diploma at Brockville Business College. As a teen, Mom worked at Kyle’s restaurant often scooping ice cream for the regulars. She would speak fondly of this time, saying they were like a family. She then went to work at Canada Coal in Accounts Receivable, again, thoroughly enjoying her work. She also sang and played piano for many functions as a young woman. Mom met Jack, her husband of 42 years, through mutual friends, Ward & Jean Hanes. When they married Mom and Dad moved to Prescott where they established their lives and raised their four daughters. When we were little, Mom played a pivotal role as a volunteer for the Town of Prescott Recreation Department, assisting in the establishment and activities of the neighborhood playgrounds. Mom’s backyard became a central hub for play, corn roasts and winter skating for kids in Fairways subdivision. Everyone knew they were welcome. She was an important figure in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, taking on the role of secretary/treasurer for too many years to count and she became the first women elder. She also sang in the choir and worked alongside the women of the church to host the ham and bean suppers St. Andrew’s was famous for. Mom found great satisfaction in her work, working right up into her early 80s, first with Fort Construction as a bookkeeper and finally as a ‘girl Friday’ at the end of her career with Normac Enterprises. Along with her church, her career helped define who she was.
Mourning her death and celebrating a life well lived are her daughters, Margaret, Barbara, Marjorie and Evelyn, and her son in-laws Donald Haist, and Chris McFarlane, as well as 6 grandchildren and her great granddaughter, Merryn. We wish Mom a peaceful journey and a joyous reunion with those who went before. We will miss you the rest of our lives.

A Private Family Service will be held with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
